A single hard freeze can crack an engine block or split a water line in a matter of hours, and most owners don’t find the damage until they try to start the boat in spring. Our service team winterizes your boat every year before it goes into storage, so you can skip the repair bill and the lost weeks on the water.

Winterization protects your engine and every onboard system that holds water. Whether your boat stays in a slip, sits in dry storage, or heads home on a trailer, we can get it ready for the colder months.

Why Boat Winterization Matters

Water expands by about nine percent when it freezes, and it pushes outward with enough force to crack engine blocks, damage fiberglass, and ruin plumbing and refrigeration systems. Winterization drains water from those systems and replaces it with antifreeze, leaving nothing behind that can freeze and expand.

Boats in milder parts of the Southeast benefit too. An unexpected cold snap can still reach below freezing, and months of sitting idle invite moisture, mildew, corrosion, and fuel breakdown. Stabilized fuel, fogged cylinders, and properly greased components mean fewer problems when you bring the boat back out.

What Our Winterization Services Include

Available services vary by marina, so check with your local Morningstar Marinas team for the options at your location.

Standard Winter Service

We add stabilizer to the fuel, fog the engine, change the lower unit lube, and grease the fittings. We also pull the prop, grease the shaft, and spray the engine with a protective coating.

Full 4-Stroke Winter Service

Everything in the standard winter service, plus an oil and oil filter change so your engine sits all winter with clean oil instead of used oil.

Onboard Systems Protection

We drain and protect your engine’s cooling system with antifreeze, fog carbureted engines as needed, and winterize your freshwater system, waste tanks, generator, and ballast tanks.

Annual Service Add-On

Many owners schedule their annual service at the same time. It’s recommended once a year or every 100 hours, whichever comes first, and covers the oil and oil filter, fuel filter, gear oil, spark plugs, timing belt, and greasing of the engine points and prop shaft.

When to Winterize Your Boat

The best time to winterize is after your last trip of the season and before overnight temperatures start dropping toward freezing. In colder markets that often means October. Farther south, owners have more room, but waiting for the forecast to turn leaves you competing for a spot on a full service schedule. Booking early gives our team time to do the job right and gives you one less thing to think about once the weather changes.

Pair Winterization With Storage and Shrink-Wrap

Winterization protects what’s inside your boat. Shrink-wrap and boat storage protect the outside. A properly installed shrink-wrap cover keeps out rain, snow, debris, and pests, and indoor dry storage keeps your boat clean and dry until spring.

Spring Start-Up

When the weather warms up, our team can reverse the process and get your boat ready for the water. Ask about spring recommissioning when you book your winterization so your boat is ready on your schedule.

Boat Winterization FAQs

When should I winterize my boat?
Plan to winterize after your last outing of the season and before overnight temperatures approach freezing. Service schedules fill up quickly in the fall, so booking early is the safest approach.

Do I need to winterize my boat every year?
Yes. Any water left in your engine or onboard systems can freeze, and fuel left untreated over the winter can break down. Yearly winterization is the most reliable way to prevent freeze damage and costly spring repairs.

Do I need to winterize a boat in a warmer climate?
Freezing temperatures are less common in coastal Georgia and Florida, but cold snaps do happen. Fuel stabilization and moisture protection also help any boat that will sit unused for weeks or months. Your local marina team can recommend the right level of service for your area.

Can I leave my boat in the water over the winter?
In many areas, yes, but the engine and onboard systems still need protection from freezing temperatures. Talk with your marina about whether in-water or dry storage makes more sense for your boat and location.

What’s the difference between winterization and shrink-wrapping?
Winterization protects the engine and internal systems by removing water and adding antifreeze, stabilizer, and lubricants. Shrink-wrapping is a protective cover that shields the exterior from weather and pests. Most boats stored for the winter benefit from both.

Can I winterize my boat myself?
Some owners do, but missing a single step can leave water in a system that later freezes. A professional winterization gives you confidence that every system is protected before the boat goes into storage.
