There’s a saying in the U.S. Navy that it’s not where the sea takes you, it’s who it makes you. Glenn Kuffel, the rockstar General Manager at our Mayport marina in Jacksonville, FL, lives by that phrase. Before joining Morningstar, Glenn spent 35+ years in the Navy, enlisting as a Hospital Corpsman right out of high school and retiring as Commanding Officer (*mic drop*)
What was it like to work and lead in the U.S. Navy?
Every day, I worked with great Americans who were mission-focused, placing their ships and shipmates above themselves, and whose families made countless sacrifices to support their sailor. It was an honor to serve with them and humbling to lead them.
You held an impressive list of positions and responsibilities during your time in the Navy – walk us through them.
With some hard work and the trust and help of my juniors, peers, and seniors, I received a naval officer’s commission as a Surface Warfare Officer serving in engineering, weapons, and navigation assignments on destroyers and cruisers. I had the honor and privilege to serve as the Commanding Officer of the mine counter-measure ship USS AVENGER, the Mayport-based destroyer USS CARNEY, and the Mayport-based ship squadron, Naval Surface Squadron FOURTEEN. I participated in multiple combat operations and served ashore as an Admiral’s side, Naval Academy ethics instructor and as a Naval advisor on the staff of the Office of the Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon.
Wow. Thank you for your service. Now that you’re retired from the Navy and actually have some free time, how do you spend it?
Bicycling in metric century rides, tending my fruit tree, vegetable & butterfly garden, making sourdough bread (the starter is going on 5 years of continuous use), canning jams and fruit butter and building furniture using 18th-century handtool joinery and techniques.
Suddenly feeling self-conscious…my answer would have been Netflix. Last question, tell us about your family?
I am blessed with a fantastic, loving wife, Nancy, of 33 years this August, and two wonderful children who call Florida home. Our daughter, Megan, is a first-grade teacher in Union County and our son, Ryan, is an analyst with Red Lobster in Orlando. When Nancy isn’t teaching pre-K at Lakewood Presbyterian Preschool, you may see her from time to time by my side at the marina. If you meet her, you’ll quickly come to know why I am lucky and blessed to be with her.
See? We weren’t kidding when we said Glenn is a rockstar. We hope you have the chance to meet him if you’re ever down in Florida and if Mayport is your home marina, let Glenn know anything you need to make your experience at Morningstar the best it can possibly be. While you’re at it, see if you can convince him to let you try some of his homemade sourdough.
