Boat Safety: Hurricane Season Edition

As you likely know, June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season. With your boat docked at a marina, there are several precautionary measures you can take to protect your boat from stormy weather, starting with quality lines and fenders.

Dock lines should be of a diameter that fits the size of your vessel (size charts are found on most dock line packaging) and of a length that runs at least ¾ the length of your vessel. Dock lines should be pliable, with the ability to stretch under a load without breaking.

A simple test for checking that your dock lines are in good shape is to see how easily you can coil your dock lines on the dock. If they coil easily in a tight circular fashion, your lines are fresh and ready for the season. If they are resistant to coiling in a tight pattern, it may be time to change your lines. Although new dock lines don’t come cheap, they are probably much less expensive than the deductibles on your insurance policy, and well worth the safety of your boat.

In addition to checking your dock lines, take note of the size and inflation of your fenders, as properly sized and inflated fenders are also extremely important in preserving your boat. If you are not sure whether your lines and fenders are in the right condition, please contact the marina at 912-634-1128 and we will be more than happy to assist in making sure you are ready for any and all weather events.

Here are some additional vessel readiness tips:

  • When leaving your boat for any period of time, turn off and disconnect the waterline from your boat.
  • Double all dock lines (bow, stern, forward and aft spring lines)
  • Have additional lines and fenders readily available for marina staff to add in the event of dangerous weather. (Lines and fenders tangled and buried in cockpit lockers is not considered readily available.)
  • A clean boat is the sign of a well maintained vessel, so if you haven’t given your boat a bath recently, do yourself and your vessel a favor and put some shine to her. If you are not interested in doing so yourself, we offer a diversity of detailing services, so do not hesitate to contact us at 912-634-1128 for a quote to keep your vessel looking great.

As always, if you have any questions or need any assistance with your boat whatsoever, we are available and willing to help in any way that we can!
