locker. When you’re out offshore cruising 10 or more miles out in the open water and your boat suddenly starts taking on water, what do you do? I have read a few articles about this and found some bad advice and some good advice.

First action I would take is to determine where the leak is and how serious it is. Maybe it’s an engine water intake hose that failed and can be repaired easily, or maybe it’s a fracture in the hull caused from an impact while underway. Is it repairable? Do you have the tools and parts to make repairs? Will the bilge pumps keep up with the intruding water?

Well as scary as a sinking boat is, there are a couple of mechanical parts and tools you should have in your boat that could change your whole outcome in just such an emergency.

Are your bilge pumps in good working condition? Do you have the tools and parts onboard to make emergency repairs? And the most overlooked item that boaters do not think about are your batteries. If your batteries are more than 2 years old, they may only have 80% or less of their stored power. Your bilge pumps are connected to the battery system in your boat. If you’re dead in the water and the engines are off, you could have less than 2 hours of bilge pump use before the pumps stop and the engines may not restart. Now no matter if you can make the required repairs, you’re going swimming and I hope you all have a plan for abandoning ship (required safety gear like life jackets and flairs, and a radio to contact Emergency Services).

The best solution is to be prepared before you leave your dock, let the marina know your cruising plans, equip your vessel with basic tools and items like a basic tool set, duct tape and water proof calk, as well as have your batteries load tested, or replaced as it may make boating safer and a lot more fun. Contact our service department to get your batteries load tested before going on a trip. We are offering Vessel Safety Checks on June 5th and 7th to help you be sure you’re prepared with all necessary safety equipment.

Jeff Covey, General Manager
Morningstar Marinas | Great Lakes
231-759-8230

We have another one coming up on June 5th through June 7th conducted by the United States Power Squadron and the USCG Auxiliary. There are sign-up sheets at the office, at the service desk and at the fuel dock.

Why should you have a Vessel Safety Check? They will make sure you have the appropriate equipment onboard from life jackets to fire extinguishers, distress signals and navigation lights.

Ralph, with the Power Squadron, also has current MARPOL stickers available for your boat. What is MARPOL? In 1973, the International Maritime Organization adopted the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, now know universally as MARPOL, which has been amended by the Protocols of 1989 and 9197. The MARPOL Convention advises on issues of pollution and dumping of waste in our waterways. The Power Squadron and the USCG can be of great assistance in knowing these rules.

Here is a great website to walk you through what will happen with your Vessel Safety Check, and what things to have on board and updated:

http://cgaux.org/vsc/
Grills, power washers, kayaks, buckets, etc may not be stored on the docks as it impedes use by other boaters and is a safety issue.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION!

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A THUNDERSTORM

We will start to see afternoon thunderstorms popping up with the hot summer temperatures. Do you know what to do and what to look for? Here are three quick tips to remember:

Know the weather forecast and learn the signs of a storm approaching. Dark, towering or threatening clouds, and distant lightning and thunder are signs to watch for.

Act early. One of the worst things you can do is wait until the last minute and then rush to the marina as a storm is unleashing. Remember, if the marina launched 100 boats over six hours, we can’t pick them all up within 15 minutes (or even get them all to the docks). Once there is lightning in the area, forklift operations are shut down for 30 minutes. So make plans early to either be back at the docks prior to the storm’s approach, or have another option in mind.

If you are coming into the marina during a storm, the no wake rules still apply! Don’t make a bad situation worse. Plan ahead and pay attention to make sure your boat and its passengers stay safe this summer.

WEEKEND FORECAST

Now on to more pleasant subjects – like this weekend’s warm and sunny forecast! We would like to remind everyone the “One Hour” parking spaces on the far left side of the parking lot are designated as one hour parking spaces for a reason. We ask that everyone be respectful of these parking spaces. If no other spaces are available, there is an extensive overflow lot which runs along the length of the marsh, across from the Waterfront Condos.

WEATHER IN GOLDEN ISLES

The weather on Friday will be warm, with a chance thunderstorm in spots and a clear night, with a high of 84 degrees and a low of 68 degrees. Saturday will be partly sunny, again with a chance of a thunderstorm in spots, and a clear night, with a high of 86 degrees and a low of 70 degrees. To locate bait keep an eye out for birds working an area, also work with friends that maybe going that day. After loading the live wells, now it’s go time. The only question is where to go? If the weather permits the fishing offshore this time of year can be banner. Kings, cobia, and the occasional sailfish are just a few that will be caught while slow trolling.

If bottom fishing is more your thing, grouper is open as of May first. Good luck getting a bait to a grouper, those pesky red snapper that are nearly extinct are swarming and they are hungry! If mother nature decides to close the ocean for the day, break out some inshore gear and go. The jetties and main river channel will be holding bull reds. Using half a blue crab or cut lady fish, pin them down in the current and hang on. When catching these fish always have a venting tool available and know how to use it. Flounder reports have been good as of lately, not huge fish, but good numbers. Finger mullet or mud minnows are a great live bait and Berkley Gulp swimming minnow on a jig head can be deadly on the flat fish. Hope everyone has a safe summer and catches the fish of a lifetime!

Cheers,
Captain Jeremy Alvarez 904-626-8403
Jacksonvillefishingcharters.com

SUMMER NEWS + TIPS

With warm weather and seas here things around the marina have begun to bustle once again. As such we have a few reminders to reiterate for your safety and convenience.

We ask that you do not drive past the cones up front down into the wash rack area. This is our forklift operating area and is unsafe for vehicle traffic.

If you choose to have your vessel fueled up prior to being put back into your dry storage slip, it is required that you not fill your tank(s) more than 80% full. With changes in temperature gas will expand and contract which can lead to gas leaking from the fuel vent. This can cause damage to any boats under your boat as well as create a hazardous working environment for us. If this rule is broken, you will be charged a Stretch and Run fee to empty some fuel from the boat and prevent any spillage.

We ask that you call us at least 45 minutes in advance to your arrival so that we may have your vessel prepped upon your arrival. We don’t want you to miss any fun in the sun!

When you’re filleting those big catches of yours at our Fish Cleaning Station, please do not throw them onto the beach. Hard to believe we’re three days down and a third of the way through the tour. Like they say, time flies when you’re having fun - and our pack is having so much fun!

In St. Augustine, Fla., boaters and bikers went boating and touring, compliments of Freedom Boat Club franchise owner Lisa Almeida.

The tour rolled into the Bahia Bleu Marina by Morningstar Marinas for a sunset dinner hosted by Brian and Tom McCarthy of Freedom Boat Club-Savannah, Ga.

Although we cruised out of town in ideal chamber of commerce conditions with a local TV cameraman catching the roar of our sweet machines, we experienced a totally different sound of thunder several hours later as we throttled upstate. Rain flirted and finally smacked us in the rump with a famous Florida gully washer.

Ever seen a bunch of bikers on the side of the road trying to dig out their rain gear or pull up their rain pants? If that’s not bad enough, the worst is riding in the rain and feeling that inevitable trickle begin to slip down the inside of your boots, eventually cascading, pooling and puddling around your feet. Yuck! No real complaints, though, as we only had to ride wet for about 20 minutes before returning to the sun god’s good graces. And the good news: It’s been sunny ever since!

After about 6-1/2 hours from launch, we rolled together into St. Augustine, Fla., in perfect staggered formation, no worse for the rain, and right through the historic district en route to our hotel. Dinner was at the popular Gypsy Cab Company. Twenty of us piled into a private dining room, where we renewed old friendships with loads of laughter while toasting new ones.

Saturday was nothing short of spectacular!

Events http://www.morningstarmarinas.com/blog/post/HULL-OF-A-TOUR-Sun-and-fun-in-St.-Augustine-and-Savannah-740 New Online Course Helps Boats and Marinas Survive Hurricanes http://www.morningstarmarinas.com/blog/post/New-Online-Course-Helps-Boats-and-Marinas-Survive-Hurricanes-738
New Online Course Helps Boats and Marinas Survive Hurricanes

Atlantic Hurricane Season Starts June 1

ALEXANDRIA, VA, May 13, 2015 – History has proven that when hurricanes and recreational boats get together, the result isn’t pretty. But what if every boat owner was armed with a specific plan to prepare their boat for an approaching storm? An online course, “Hurricane Preparation for Boaters <http://www.BoatUS.org/courses> ,” available from the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water and the United States Power Squadrons, aims to do just that. Conveniently available online, the course is $24.95 and can be taken from a desktop, tablet or smartphone by going to BoatUS.org/courses.

“The BoatUS Marine Insurance damage avoidance program has shown there are measures that boaters can take to reduce hurricane boat damage and improve their chances with surviving a storm,” said BoatUS Foundation Director of Education Amanda Suttles Pérez. “The most important thing for boaters to remember is that early planning is key and if you wait until a storm has formed or a watch or warning has been issued, it’s often too late to put some plans into place. This course is just the latest from us to help boaters get ahead of this timely task.”

Boaters taking the course will be able to create a hurricane plan for their boat, with specific solutions for boats stored in the water such as docks, moorings, hurricane holes, canals; on high ground at the boatyard or club; or even on a trailer in your own backyard. They will learn to evaluate the storm protection provided by a marina or storage area and determine if, when and how a boat should move before a hurricane. It also shows the steps needed to take before a hurricane makes landfall and how to secure a boat for hurricane conditions, including diagrams for tying lines.

BoatUS also offers many other hurricane planning tools at BoatUS.com/hurricanes, including downloadable, no cost hurricane preparation guides for boaters and marinas, boatyards and clubs.

News http://www.morningstarmarinas.com/blog/post/New-Online-Course-Helps-Boats-and-Marinas-Survive-Hurricanes-738 Morningstar Mom’s http://www.morningstarmarinas.com/blog/post/Morningstar-Moms-737
Flowers for our Morningstar Moms. I thought I would try pulling boats the Skippers way without dock lines. After trying it, I do not want to continue this practice. The staff and I have decided that a minimum of two dock lines should be on each boat. Safety is the largest reason for this change. Dock lines give the boat handler much more control over the vessel. It is highly more likely that a boat will be damaged if handled without dock lines. Below is a chart showing the appropriate dock line diameter for the length of your boat.

Boat Length

Up to 27’

28’-31’

32’-36’

37’-45’

46’-54’

55’-63’

64’-72’

Dock Line Dia.

3/8”

7/16”

1/2”

5/8”

3/4”

7/8”

1”

Click here for a video illustrating how to properly tie-off to a cleat.

DOCK LINE SPECIAL

We will be running a special on dock lines for the month of May. Pre-order your dock lines and receive 25% off of the retail price.

Call 704-528-3328 or email skippers@morningstarmarinas.com
by May 31st to take advantage of this special.

After June 1st, any boat without dock lines will be provided lines by Morningstar, and we will charge the cost of the lines to your account.

LAKE NORMAN BOAT ACCIDENT TRAINING SCENARIO

A training scenario will be held May 9 on Lake Norman at channel marker 15A beginning 8 a.m. Boaters will be asked to maintain a no wake speed and keep a safe distance while near this area.

The scenario will involve a simulated fire on a large cruise vessel, with training exercises in rescue from water, rescue from vessel, extinguishing a boat fire, and search and recovery efforts. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the U.S. Power Squadron will secure the area and notify recreational boaters.

A command post will be established at Hager’s Creek boating access area. Upon completion of the scenario, the Denver Fire Department’s planning section will draft an action plan for large vessel accident contingencies. I thought to myself: “You have made the right decision.” My daughters, Zoe (8), and Mia (6), and I took two days to drive here. We had a lot of fun on the trip.

On our first day traveling, we stayed in a hotel with an indoor pool in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the night. The kids thought it was awesome. (Even though the pool was the size of a bath tub.)
On our second day, we commuted from Pittsburgh to Charlotte. The kids and I had a blast on the drive. They thought it was SO cool that we could go through mountains in a tunnel. We stopped at the New River Gorge Bridge and admired the view. It was important for me to make that stop. My dad is originally from outside of Beckley, WV; I remember visiting the bridge as a child.

The past few of days on the job have been a lot of fun. I am learning the ropes. Morningstar’s procedures are different than the procedures that I have used, but I’ll pick it up. Plus, I have a great support staff behind me.

The crew and I are looking forward to the 2015 boating season. We are planning some fun events for you. The first event is going to be a luau on Memorial Day weekend. If you have any ideas for events you would like to take place at Skippers, please share with us. We are always open to new ideas.
Additionally, we are going to be running some new promotions this year. See below for a promotion on mechanic service.

Please find a link to a video by Waterlust (click here) . Waterlust creates media and products meant to get you thinking about how water affects your life. Plus, their videos are super cool! Please enjoy.
Finally, if you are down at the marina please do stop in and say hi. The best part of working at a marina is the boaters. They’ve been fending off the elements and growth for getting on two-and-a-half centuries. That’s why it’s so remarkable that a rural Virginia county contains the well-preserved remains of an earthen fort built by hardscrabble colonists in 1776.

You have to be looking for what’s left of the Battle of Cricket Hill. Either that or you stumble on the site scoping out a spot to store your pleasure craft. That’s because these earthworks are now hiding in plain sight, guarding, of all things, a boatel. The fort is right where Americans left it a couple centuries back, on a handsome shoreline in Mathews County, Virginia. These old trenches escaped the bulldozer despite the centuries of development that happened around them.

In 1776, Virginia’s last colonial governor, Lord Dunmore, took up residence with about 500 soldiers on Gwynn’s Island, separated from Mathews’s mainland by a narrow inlet called Milford Haven. Dunmore ordered his position there shored up with earthworks and a stockaded fort. He thought those defenses would suit while his command recuperated from widespread illnesses and he figured out what to do next.

Read more here
News http://www.morningstarmarinas.com/blog/post/Battle-of-Cricket-Hill-Fought-Here-729 Jack McGowan Fishing Seminar Tues. Jack has been fishing the local waters for many years and we hope to see many of our fish loving customers there. Jack McGowan’s Spring Fishing Report http://www.morningstarmarinas.com/blog/post/Capt.-Jack-McGowans-Spring-Fishing-Report-727 More bait means more fish!

Conditions are warming up on the coast! We are seeing more bait beginning to push in. Some cold water sharks are still around. The first sharks to arrive and last to leave in local waters are bonnetheads. Bonnetheads are starting to show up. Seatrout which up to late have been scarce are showing up as well! Seatrout and blues can be seen crashing small bait fish! As warming continues and salinity levels are in more typical range. The bite should be heating up. Seatrout are starting to bite! Some of female seatrout are already full of roe and ready to spawn. The whiting bite has been good with most of these fish taken on shrimp or combination of shrimp and cut bait. Redfish action while not hot can still provide good action. Redfish can be found upriver, in the heads of creeks and near shell rakes in local rivers. Shell rakes close to deep water often are some of the most productive areas.

We started this spring with a slow start. Mostly credited to a cold winter. The bite was primarily redfish and sheepshead. The sheepshead bite is slowing as more bait and other fish push in. The seatrout bite will likely continue to heat up in the coming days and weeks. Whiting although not a sizable fish is still a fun fish to go for when other species are scarce or you are simply just catching whiting. If you’re catching whiting while trout fishing its probably time to fish for whiting.

Some local bait shrimpers are finding shrimp south of Savannah. This is typical pattern for Savannah. As conditions warm shrimp and other bait will be more abundant in local waters. For now no local shrimp but some local shop will have a supply of live shrimp.

Fishing forecast should be on the upswing as conditions warm! Keep what you want to eat and release the rest!

Hope this of interest and help!

Fish On!

Capt. A well-known fire extinguisher manufacturer, Kidde, in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has announced a voluntary recall to replace certain Kidde fire extinguisher units. A faulty valve component can cause the disposable fire extinguishers not to fully discharge when the lever is repeatedly pressed and released during a fire emergency, posing a risk of injury. About 4.6 million extinguishers are affected that were sold nationwide between August 2013 and November 2014.

To see if you have an affected fire extinguisher and arrange for a replacement, go to www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2015/Kidde-Recalls-Disposable-Plastic-Fire-Extinguishers.

According to the CPSC, Kidde has received 11 reports of fire extinguishers that failed to discharge, but no injuries have been reported. A February 12, 2015 safety notice from Kidde stated, “Due to our commitment to quality and safety, we have corrected the issue for production going forward, and are working with customers to obtain all recalled units currently in stock.”

Thirty-one models of the disposable fire extinguishers are affected. The extinguishers are red, white, or silver with black plastic valves and ABC or BC rated and manufactured in Mexico between July 23, 2013 and October 15, 2014 and sold at department, home, and hardware stores as well as some marine supply stores. Some of the affected extinguisher models were designed for the boating market and have a nameplate on the front with the names Mariner 10, Mariner 110, Mariner 5, and Mariner 5 G.

If you’d like to know more about how fire extinguishers work, the types needed for boating as well as how many to keep aboard, go to BoatUS.org/fire-extinguishers.

###

About Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS):

BoatUS is the nation¹s largest organization of recreational boaters with over a half million members. We are the boat owners’ voice on Capitol Hill and fight for their rights. The BoatUS insurance program gives boat owners the specialized coverage and superior service they need, and we help keep boaters safe and our waters clean with assistance from the non-profit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water. Hope you and your family are all well. Thankfully noone here at work has been hit with the flu or severe cold (yet) agh. We are thinking of spring since this weekend is spring ahead for the time change. That is good news to us all! We took every precaution we could this year by reaching out to you by either phone or email to winterize the boat. We are going to be flooded with calls all at once to de winterize I’m sure. So, I’m giving you a personal heads up to maybe take a look at the calendar and let us now by email or call when you think you’d be first using the boat so we can get it all ready for you. When we de winterize we also hose it down just in case it got dusty during the winter months.

This is also a good time if you have some other work you want done prior to the busy season, now is the time to get on Andy’s schedule for it to be done in time.

We loved seeing some of you at the boat show and thank you for taking part in our fun contest to guess the number of sinkers for a free detail. Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Gagnier for guessing within 4 of the correct number. Mr. Madison was in second being just 9 numbers off of the right number.

We’ve been working hard this winter on keeping the building and property in tip top shape for you. We gave the lift a “lift” if you will. It has all new paint and stickers. The golf cart has been totally redone. The racks inside have been getting new carpet to keep your hull protected. They have also been scraped to remove all the rust and repainted to eliminate rust stains in the boats. We are in the process of upgrading the docks and acquiring rental boats as well.

The work racks have been moved closer to the parking lot for easier access to your truck while cleaning. We ask that when using the work racks this summer please keep your vehicles in the designated parking area to keep the loading area clear for the forklift. We appreciate your help with that.

Our staff is excited to see you all again. Kat is still here in the office with me. Andy and Jamie are both still in doing service here. Curtis is our lift driver going on a year now. Will and Jack are now seniors in high school shopping around for colleges, but will be here again this summer to assist you at the docks. Will is being trained on the lift, you will see him putting your boat in for you this year. Overall, the sheepshead has been good but as conditions changed with spring tide and the general movement of sheepshead from inshore to offshore the bite has stalled. Some inshore sheepshead have been caught on the lower tide stages as well with reports of limits of seatrout taken south of Savannah on soft plastics such as christmas tree curl tails and pink 1/4 oz. DOA shrimp. Those finding seatrout pitching soft plastics are working the baits slowly. Other fishermen have found seatrout in the heads of creeks. Typically fishing a head of a creek is best at low incoming. Those fishing cork rig will set the rig so the bait is barely off the bottom. Structure close by can soak up heat and on low water radiate warmth on the incoming tide. Soft plastics can work well in those situations as well as bait.

Thank You! Fish On! Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), with 30 co-sponsors introduced the Renewable Fuel Standard Reform Act of 2015. BoatUS is urging all boaters to contact their US Representative to support the bill. “The new bill would recognize the failure of the current Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and its out of date ethanol-mandate, and make the necessary changes so there is a safe fuel for all gasoline powered engines,” said BoatUS Government Affairs Program Manager Nicole Palya Wood.
According to Wood, BoatUS supports the bill because, “The RFS Reform Act acknowledges the reality of America’s declining fuel consumption, allows for the investment in other more compatible biofuels, and erases the twisted math that forces more ethanol onto a marketplace that neither demands it, nor can physically absorb it at safe levels.”
Currently, there are no marine engines in the US warrantied to run on any gasoline blend greater than 10% ethanol (E10). According to AAA, only about 12 million out of the more than 240 million light-duty vehicles on the roads today are approved to use E15 gasoline, based on a survey conducted by AAA of auto manufacturers. Any damage from the use of higher ethanol fuels (E15 or greater) in cars and trucks will void many manufacturers’ warranties.
When the RFS was written in 2005, it assumed that Americans’ gasoline use would continue to rise and mandated escalating amounts of biofuels to be blended with our fuel. However, since 2005, gasoline usage has actually dropped steadily. The unintended affect is now the law that forces more ethanol into the nation’s gasoline supply, and to maintain adherence with the RFS rules, in 2010 the EPA permitted fuel containing up to 15% ethanol (E15) into the marketplace – a fuel many gasoline engines cannot use.
It is illegal to use E15 in boat engines, snowmobiles, motorcycles, small engines such as lawnmowers and leaf blowers as well as any vehicle made before 2001. However, this fuel can now be found at over 100 gas stations in 16 states at the same pumps as E10 and ethanol-free gasoline.
The potential for misfueling is significant. In the US, nine out of every ten boaters own a trailerable boat that is most often filled up at a roadside gas station. Additionally, these higher blend ethanol fuels are often the cheapest fuels at the pump.
The new bill would cap the ethanol requirements at E10 (10 percent ethanol), would effectively prohibit the use of corn-based ethanol in the RFS, require more advanced biofuels and take into account actual, real-world production of biofuels when setting requirements.
Boaters can ask their Congressman to support and co-sponsor the bill by going to: http://goo.gl/2H8vI9.

About Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS):
BoatUS is the nation¹s largest organization of recreational boaters with over a half million members. We are the boat owners’ voice on Capitol Hill and fight for their rights. We help ensure a roadside breakdown doesn’t end a boating or fishing trip before it begins, and on the water, we bring boaters safely back to the launch ramp or dock when their boat won’t, day or night. The BoatUS insurance program gives boat owners the specialized coverage and superior service they need, and we help keep boaters safe and our waters clean with assistance from the non-profit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water.
