I thought to myself: “You have made the right decision.” My daughters, Zoe (8), and Mia (6), and I took two days to drive here. We had a lot of fun on the trip.

On our first day traveling, we stayed in a hotel with an indoor pool in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the night. The kids thought it was awesome. (Even though the pool was the size of a bath tub.)
On our second day, we commuted from Pittsburgh to Charlotte. The kids and I had a blast on the drive. They thought it was SO cool that we could go through mountains in a tunnel. We stopped at the New River Gorge Bridge and admired the view. It was important for me to make that stop. My dad is originally from outside of Beckley, WV; I remember visiting the bridge as a child.

The past few of days on the job have been a lot of fun. I am learning the ropes. Morningstar’s procedures are different than the procedures that I have used, but I’ll pick it up. Plus, I have a great support staff behind me.

The crew and I are looking forward to the 2015 boating season. We are planning some fun events for you. The first event is going to be a luau on Memorial Day weekend. If you have any ideas for events you would like to take place at Skippers, please share with us. We are always open to new ideas.
Additionally, we are going to be running some new promotions this year. See below for a promotion on mechanic service.

Please find a link to a video by Waterlust (click here) . Waterlust creates media and products meant to get you thinking about how water affects your life. Plus, their videos are super cool! Please enjoy.
Finally, if you are down at the marina please do stop in and say hi. The best part of working at a marina is the boaters. I look forward to meeting all of you.

Here’s to summer 2015!

Deb Agostinelli, General Manager
Morningstar Marinas | Skipper’s Landing
704-528-3328

Service Work Special!

Our mechanic, Grant is here for any needs you have on your boat. They’ve been fending off the elements and growth for getting on two-and-a-half centuries. That’s why it’s so remarkable that a rural Virginia county contains the well-preserved remains of an earthen fort built by hardscrabble colonists in 1776.

You have to be looking for what’s left of the Battle of Cricket Hill. Either that or you stumble on the site scoping out a spot to store your pleasure craft. That’s because these earthworks are now hiding in plain sight, guarding, of all things, a boatel. The fort is right where Americans left it a couple centuries back, on a handsome shoreline in Mathews County, Virginia. These old trenches escaped the bulldozer despite the centuries of development that happened around them.

In 1776, Virginia’s last colonial governor, Lord Dunmore, took up residence with about 500 soldiers on Gwynn’s Island, separated from Mathews’s mainland by a narrow inlet called Milford Haven. Dunmore ordered his position there shored up with earthworks and a stockaded fort. He thought those defenses would suit while his command recuperated from widespread illnesses and he figured out what to do next.

Read more here
News http://www.morningstarmarinas.com/blog/post/Battle-of-Cricket-Hill-Fought-Here-729 Jack McGowan Fishing Seminar Tues. April 21st http://www.morningstarmarinas.com/blog/post/Jack-McGowan-Fishing-Seminar-Tues.-April-21st-728
Jack McGowan is hosting a fishing seminar on Tues. April 21st 6:00pm on the patio at the marina. If you are a fishing beginner or a seasoned fisherman these seminars are fun and very informative. Jack has been fishing the local waters for many years and we hope to see many of our fish loving customers there. Call the office at 912-354-2283 to RSVP.
Events http://www.morningstarmarinas.com/blog/post/Jack-McGowan-Fishing-Seminar-Tues.-April-21st-728 Capt. Jack McGowan’s Spring Fishing Report http://www.morningstarmarinas.com/blog/post/Capt.-Jack-McGowans-Spring-Fishing-Report-727 More bait means more fish!

Conditions are warming up on the coast! We are seeing more bait beginning to push in. Some cold water sharks are still around. The first sharks to arrive and last to leave in local waters are bonnetheads. Bonnetheads are starting to show up. Seatrout which up to late have been scarce are showing up as well! Seatrout and blues can be seen crashing small bait fish! As warming continues and salinity levels are in more typical range. The bite should be heating up. Seatrout are starting to bite! Some of female seatrout are already full of roe and ready to spawn. The whiting bite has been good with most of these fish taken on shrimp or combination of shrimp and cut bait. Redfish action while not hot can still provide good action. Redfish can be found upriver, in the heads of creeks and near shell rakes in local rivers. Shell rakes close to deep water often are some of the most productive areas.

We started this spring with a slow start. Mostly credited to a cold winter. The bite was primarily redfish and sheepshead. The sheepshead bite is slowing as more bait and other fish push in. The seatrout bite will likely continue to heat up in the coming days and weeks. Whiting although not a sizable fish is still a fun fish to go for when other species are scarce or you are simply just catching whiting. If you’re catching whiting while trout fishing its probably time to fish for whiting.

Some local bait shrimpers are finding shrimp south of Savannah. This is typical pattern for Savannah. As conditions warm shrimp and other bait will be more abundant in local waters. For now no local shrimp but some local shop will have a supply of live shrimp.

Fishing forecast should be on the upswing as conditions warm! Keep what you want to eat and release the rest!

Hope this of interest and help!

Fish On!

Capt. A well-known fire extinguisher manufacturer, Kidde, in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has announced a voluntary recall to replace certain Kidde fire extinguisher units. A faulty valve component can cause the disposable fire extinguishers not to fully discharge when the lever is repeatedly pressed and released during a fire emergency, posing a risk of injury. About 4.6 million extinguishers are affected that were sold nationwide between August 2013 and November 2014.

To see if you have an affected fire extinguisher and arrange for a replacement, go to www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2015/Kidde-Recalls-Disposable-Plastic-Fire-Extinguishers.

According to the CPSC, Kidde has received 11 reports of fire extinguishers that failed to discharge, but no injuries have been reported. A February 12, 2015 safety notice from Kidde stated, “Due to our commitment to quality and safety, we have corrected the issue for production going forward, and are working with customers to obtain all recalled units currently in stock.”

Thirty-one models of the disposable fire extinguishers are affected. The extinguishers are red, white, or silver with black plastic valves and ABC or BC rated and manufactured in Mexico between July 23, 2013 and October 15, 2014 and sold at department, home, and hardware stores as well as some marine supply stores. Some of the affected extinguisher models were designed for the boating market and have a nameplate on the front with the names Mariner 10, Mariner 110, Mariner 5, and Mariner 5 G.

If you’d like to know more about how fire extinguishers work, the types needed for boating as well as how many to keep aboard, go to BoatUS.org/fire-extinguishers.

###

About Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS):

BoatUS is the nation¹s largest organization of recreational boaters with over a half million members. We are the boat owners’ voice on Capitol Hill and fight for their rights. We help ensure a roadside breakdown doesn’t end a boating or fishing trip before it begins, and on the water, we bring boaters safely back to the launch ramp or dock when their boat won’t, day or night. The BoatUS insurance program gives boat owners the specialized coverage and superior service they need, and we help keep boaters safe and our waters clean with assistance from the non-profit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water. Hope you and your family are all well. Thankfully noone here at work has been hit with the flu or severe cold (yet) agh. We are thinking of spring since this weekend is spring ahead for the time change. That is good news to us all! We took every precaution we could this year by reaching out to you by either phone or email to winterize the boat. We are going to be flooded with calls all at once to de winterize I’m sure. So, I’m giving you a personal heads up to maybe take a look at the calendar and let us now by email or call when you think you’d be first using the boat so we can get it all ready for you. When we de winterize we also hose it down just in case it got dusty during the winter months.

This is also a good time if you have some other work you want done prior to the busy season, now is the time to get on Andy’s schedule for it to be done in time.

We loved seeing some of you at the boat show and thank you for taking part in our fun contest to guess the number of sinkers for a free detail. Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Gagnier for guessing within 4 of the correct number. Mr. Madison was in second being just 9 numbers off of the right number.

We’ve been working hard this winter on keeping the building and property in tip top shape for you. We gave the lift a “lift” if you will. It has all new paint and stickers. The golf cart has been totally redone. The racks inside have been getting new carpet to keep your hull protected. They have also been scraped to remove all the rust and repainted to eliminate rust stains in the boats. We are in the process of upgrading the docks and acquiring rental boats as well.

The work racks have been moved closer to the parking lot for easier access to your truck while cleaning. We ask that when using the work racks this summer please keep your vehicles in the designated parking area to keep the loading area clear for the forklift. We appreciate your help with that.

Our staff is excited to see you all again. Kat is still here in the office with me. Andy and Jamie are both still in doing service here. Curtis is our lift driver going on a year now. Will and Jack are now seniors in high school shopping around for colleges, but will be here again this summer to assist you at the docks. Overall, the sheepshead has been good but as conditions changed with spring tide and the general movement of sheepshead from inshore to offshore the bite has stalled. Some inshore sheepshead have been caught on the lower tide stages as well with reports of limits of seatrout taken south of Savannah on soft plastics such as christmas tree curl tails and pink 1/4 oz. DOA shrimp. Those finding seatrout pitching soft plastics are working the baits slowly. Other fishermen have found seatrout in the heads of creeks. Typically fishing a head of a creek is best at low incoming. Those fishing cork rig will set the rig so the bait is barely off the bottom. Structure close by can soak up heat and on low water radiate warmth on the incoming tide. Soft plastics can work well in those situations as well as bait.

Thank You! Fish On! Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), with 30 co-sponsors introduced the Renewable Fuel Standard Reform Act of 2015. BoatUS is urging all boaters to contact their US Representative to support the bill. “The new bill would recognize the failure of the current Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and its out of date ethanol-mandate, and make the necessary changes so there is a safe fuel for all gasoline powered engines,” said BoatUS Government Affairs Program Manager Nicole Palya Wood.
According to Wood, BoatUS supports the bill because, “The RFS Reform Act acknowledges the reality of America’s declining fuel consumption, allows for the investment in other more compatible biofuels, and erases the twisted math that forces more ethanol onto a marketplace that neither demands it, nor can physically absorb it at safe levels.”
Currently, there are no marine engines in the US warrantied to run on any gasoline blend greater than 10% ethanol (E10). According to AAA, only about 12 million out of the more than 240 million light-duty vehicles on the roads today are approved to use E15 gasoline, based on a survey conducted by AAA of auto manufacturers. Any damage from the use of higher ethanol fuels (E15 or greater) in cars and trucks will void many manufacturers’ warranties.
When the RFS was written in 2005, it assumed that Americans’ gasoline use would continue to rise and mandated escalating amounts of biofuels to be blended with our fuel. However, since 2005, gasoline usage has actually dropped steadily. The unintended affect is now the law that forces more ethanol into the nation’s gasoline supply, and to maintain adherence with the RFS rules, in 2010 the EPA permitted fuel containing up to 15% ethanol (E15) into the marketplace – a fuel many gasoline engines cannot use.
It is illegal to use E15 in boat engines, snowmobiles, motorcycles, small engines such as lawnmowers and leaf blowers as well as any vehicle made before 2001. However, this fuel can now be found at over 100 gas stations in 16 states at the same pumps as E10 and ethanol-free gasoline.
The potential for misfueling is significant. In the US, nine out of every ten boaters own a trailerable boat that is most often filled up at a roadside gas station. Additionally, these higher blend ethanol fuels are often the cheapest fuels at the pump.
The new bill would cap the ethanol requirements at E10 (10 percent ethanol), would effectively prohibit the use of corn-based ethanol in the RFS, require more advanced biofuels and take into account actual, real-world production of biofuels when setting requirements.
Boaters can ask their Congressman to support and co-sponsor the bill by going to: http://goo.gl/2H8vI9.

And for more than half of the talented 17-boat Melges 32 World Championship fleet, the points spread is almost unimportant. “We’re looking at the top nine boats separated by just nine points after two races,” explained Race Officer Anderson Reggio, leader of the Coconut Grove Sailing Club-based Race Committee that braved steep, choppy seas and 15-20 knots of breeze to set the racecourse for the ultra-high performance Melges 32 racers. In contrast to those nine boats, the bottom half of the fleet finds itself with an uphill climb in the quest for a podium finish on Sunday.

Race One saw slightly less breeze than the nuclear conditions at the Pre-Worlds, with teams struggling just before the start to pick the right headsail and rig tension for the puffy course, and with just seconds to the start, Pierre Casiraghi aboard Robertissima staked his claim for the pin end of the starting line. Casiraghi made it stick, leading out to the left, while 23 year-old Dalton DeVos (Holland, Michigan) and his Delta team struggled with an average start, flushed out to the right of the course.

DeVos’ team found breeze and shifts on their side, working their way back to the middle with a solid lead over the fleet. Meanwhile, Casiraghi continued to play the shifts reaching the windward mark in third, sandwiched by two Japanese skippers. As DeVos raced down to the gate at speeds nearing 20 knots, Casiraghi jumped into second place, splitting with Delta on the second beat. The always-competitive Richard Goransson aboard Inga From Sweden reveled in the lumpy waves, grinding his way toward the front of the fleet after a mid-line start.

The young Michigander rounded the final mark just a boat length ahead of the Monaco team, and the battle was on. “I really didn’t know how close they’d gotten – I’m generally too busy steering and trying to pick my way through the waves to really look around much,” said DeVos. “When we finally gybed and I saw them in front of us, I realized our lead had disappeared.”

DeVos wasn’t phased at all despite coming so close to the race win. “Second place is plenty to be happy with in this fleet,” he said, adding that the conditions were ‘pretty much perfect for these boats. Ripping through big waves, big breeze, and warm water are what they were created for!’

Picture-perfect conditions continued through a short break, and the aggression these teams are known for bubbled to the surface during the start of Race Two. With the entire team pushing the starting line with ten seconds to go, there was no way Reggio and his team would see an ‘all clear’ start like Race One, and four boats - including Race One winner Robertissima – were called ‘OCS’, returning to the start line to clear themselves.

With a long two-mile beat, boatspeed and navigating the bigger waves efficiently was key, and it was reigning World Champion Jason Carroll’s Argo coming from the middle left with a three boat length lead at the top mark. The New York-based racer – a competitor in every Melges 32 Worlds ever held – turned three boat lengths into some 3,000 feet at the finish, beating second place Naofumi Kamei on Mamma Aiuto! over the line by over two minutes – an unheard of margin in Melges 32 championship racing. “We were feeling pretty good about a hard-fought seventh in Race One, but that second race really was amazing for us,” said Carroll, who credited his crew with the victory. “That’s not going to happen too many times at this level of sailboat racing, and these guys earned every inch of it with their hiking and intensity right to the line.”

Multiple world champion helm Deneen Demourkas (Santa Barbara, California) showed her downwind form constantly passing boats on the runs to take third place for team Groovederci.

After sailing a mistake free Race One and collecting a fourth place, Kamei and his mostly Spanish team showed good speed and smarts to take the second spot in Race Two behind Carroll. Kamei’s six points is good enough for the overall Championship lead, and while Mamma Aiuto’s Manu Weiller said he was a little surprised to be leading after Day One, he knew his team was ready for the Worlds. “We progressed a lot and we felt strong going into this regatta,” said Weiller, who admitted that Mamma Aiuto! wasn’t the fastest boat in the fleet today, but that was OK. “The crew had clean maneuvers, our skipper stayed calm, and we had a good day,” he said. “This Championship has barely begun.”

Former World Champions William Douglass on Goombay Smash and John Kilroy, Jr. on Samba Pa Ti found themselves on the back foot after just two races. Douglass suffered a knockdown on the first downwind leg of the day, damaging a spinnaker and retiring. While Kilroy was disqualified for a rules infringement at the chaotic top mark of Race 2.

With day one in the books, the motto for many teams it to ‘keep grinding.’ There are four more long days ahead with plenty of opportunities for teams to rise or drop in the standings. The forecast remains similar for the coming days – a forecast that’s almost impossibly good for Melges 32 racing - and you’re invited to watch.

Wednesday marks the second day of racing with a first initial warning of 1100.

Please LIKE our Facebook Page for up-to-the-minute coverage of the Melges 32 World Championship, including photos, videos, interviews, and much more.

TOP TEN RESULTS (After Two Races)
1.) Once all checks are complete, we will call you to give you an update on her performance and, if necessary, make any recommendations to keep your boat in tip-top running condition. And it’s only November :-( Snow makes ice, and ice makes for very slippery conditions on your boat and around the marina. Please be extra careful if you are climbing on your boat. It’s a very good idea to let someone know when you are here and when you will be returning home, just like you would do when you go out for a boat ride.

As a recap on the summer of 2014, it was cooler and wetter than normal, but it did have many wonderful weather days that you, our boaters, took advantage of. The Great Lakes Marina staff were also able to make some major improvements to the marina grounds and office. The pool was completely re-done, the parking lot re-paved, and the office area remodeled to just name a few.

Next year we hope to show you even more improvements so that you continue to feel very proud of the place where your boat calls home. A few areas we already know we will be focusing on are security, better spider control, some re-built docks and better lighting around the marina.

We want to hear your suggestions on what you’d like to see improved/changed/added in the 2015 Boating Season. Just send your thoughts to greatlakes@morningstarmarinas.com. Remember, if you don’t tell us, we don’t always know.

Please use the Auto/Customer gate when visiting Great Lakes Marina after hours. The main gate will be opened during business hours only. Please call the office if you forget the gate code at 231-759-8230.

Jeff Covey, General Manager
Morningstar Marinas | Great Lakes
231-759-8230

The winter office hours for Great Lakes Marina are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon. The fuel dock is, of course, closed for the season.
If you want in one of the storage buildings, the hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; although Jeff and Margie would be happy to open it beyond those hours if you’ll just give us a call at 231-955-8181 or 269-208-4553, or make prior arrangements.

WINTER STORAGE DO’S AND DONT’S

OUTSIDE STORAGE: Please be sure you have not tied your boat covering to one of the jack stands. In a high wind it will pull the tarp up, pulling the jack stand out and … you guessed it. This has happened in the past, and it is very expensive to upright a fallen boat. Also be sure to not leave ladders unlocked and laying around the marina.

If you wish to bottom paint your boat, you may not sand or paint your boat on the asphalt unless you provide sufficient ground cover. If you stain or paint the parking lot, you will be responsible for the costs to have the paving company come back and make repairs, as well as any pollution related expenses.

INSIDE STORAGE: There is to be no sanding or painting without prior written approval from Grahm, our service manager, or Jeff, the general manager. If given approval, you must provide sufficient ground cover as well as protection for the boats around you. Think of your neighbor boaters and the impact you will have on them before you embark on any repairs or service work.

A MESSAGE FROM SERVICE:

This is the season for general maintenance on your boat. Waxing, cleaning, sweeping and making repairs is what I’m talking about. It’s all the things you were going to do last summer but you never did. Do you remember seeing the water in your bilge, and the bilge pump that didn’t kick on? Or the day your engine sounded funny and didn’t start right away? Or you discovered your batteries were not holding a full charge?
Well it’s the season to get them fixed so you can make the most of the 2015 boating season. Get ahold of Grahm or Rick in the service department and get it fixed! We still have our Boat Waxing Special through December. Call us for details.

AFFORDABLE CUSTOM CANVAS RETURNING TO GREAT LAKES MARINA!!

As part of our desire to be a full-service marina, we welcome back a familiar face.
Brian McLellan from Affordable Custom Canvas will be bringing his canvas shop back to Great Lakes Marina. Affordable Custom Canvas will be located in the main building show room here at GLM. He is already scheduling winter work and plans to be fully operating on site early January. We welcome Brian back and hope you will also.
